New Section – Bonus Behind the Scenes

September 4th, 2011 by Derek

Just did an update following up the Romstad photos I shot back at the end of July. There is now a new section with a gallery of 15 images to go with the series, all available as prints. Have a look here:

Also over the last month I’ve had the pleasure of helping out Alterna Films with their intro for 13 o’clock, which is coming out this fall. I’ve shot a bunch of behind the scenes stuff that is up on push.ca:

Part I
Part II

Here’s a couple of my favorite shots:

Romstad; Alpine Ramble

July 27th, 2011 by Derek

There was cloud floating over the city the last couple days, checking the forecast I knew it wasn’t going to last long. Sadly I didn’t manage to shoot any mountain biking but did manage to do a hike with my brother Landon, up to the peak of Hollyburn Mountain after work. The fog was dense, it looked like not many people had been up there since spring, and the snow was still plentiful. We wrapped up the adventure with a good number of shots, two of which have made it into my People section on my portfolio, so have a look.

Carrion Crow – Fashion Shoot

Since this happened back in February and has not been posted, it is being posted now. Byron did up this awesome behind the scenes video for me:

Coiler Cable-Cam

July 4th, 2011 by Derek

Quick post, just a re-cap of the long weekend. I chilled hard, except for Saturday. Byron Kopman, Nick Dent, myself played media while Jamie Biluk, Connor MacLeod and Fonzy rode their bikes, since thats what they do. Byron and Nick set up a 300ft cable cam to follow the riders down a new section that was built on Coiler. I chilled at the bottom of the section snapping snaps of them coming out of the final corner. Here’s how Connor looks when he rides his bike.

Red on Red

The other week Kristen Smart aka Smash and I set out to do a shoot with her new Sombrio Kit and bike, the concept was super basic but came out well. Kristen threw on red lipstick which paired amazingly with the colour of her outfit, after getting a bit muddy she still looked smashing (HAH!) and the shots turned out great:

Pirate Downhill

June 23rd, 2011 by Derek

On any given Tuesday evening there is an elite group of racers gathering in the dense sub-alpine on Cypress Mountain. This series holds a cash and glory pay-out while hiding in the dank shadows from ties to any organization within cycling. This is the pirate downhill series, the course, riders, start times and weather all change… the only thing consistent is the timing.

Busy Not Posting;

- Two major shows coming up for Exposure Festival in Calgary, 2 Minor ones…

A Sense of Place:
Here And Now:

Ryan Kostel made the main posters, so go to the actual shows to see my contact/price list posters they’re really grid based. #based

Aside from seeing some good posters you probably want to see the photos there. I’m pretty happy with the overall presentation we all decided on, also happy with most work thats in it. If you think you’re the exception from most you might be, do better.

- Shot so much I dont have time to process it all.

Baku-bank was in town a couple weeks ago filming for D.O.P.E. 2. “CH”  Theres some secret folder on my website directory with like 5 shots floating around in it. If you find them you should be pretty pumped, they won’t be posted anywhere because they are in the bank for submission. Everyone did a really good job at what they do. Some major jib tricks happened on all sorts of combo letter rails like dfdfdfd and dfdl, ect…

- Spot Scouting

If you talked to me over the last week you most likley have heard me going on and on about all these sick spots up this highway somewhere in some mountains. I went scoping with my boy Nick Pb(I’d link to his facebook or something but he got kicked off for not using his real last name). Heres shot, so people actually care about this blog post.

Semester Wrap Up

December 7th, 2010 by Derek

Just a quick update with some visuals, trying to keep the blog flowing more now. This shot is from the final project for my photo illustration class. The concept that we had to work with was one of the 7 sins… I was given the sin of sloth, despite it being photo illustration class nothings composited, that sloth head is a giant foam-core head.
